Universal Design for learning supports
Different Level Content: In our cooperative learning activity, students need to research statistics on poverty. The teacher will pick a website and model how to pick out the important information from it. Students will also complete a vocabulary activity to help them understand the vocabulary used on these sites (described below).
English Learners - English learners will be provided with vocabulary resources. These students will also be given a printout of the website that the teacher modeled how to analyze. The printout will have the important information highlighted.
Sw/SN - Sw/SN will also be given the highlighted printout to help them to understand how to analyze the websites their groups are visiting.
Low - Low achieving students will be provided with scaffolds such as more user friendly websites that they can use to research their statistical data.
Middle - If middle level students are struggling finding statistical resources then the teacher will give them the name of some websites that will help them.
High - High achieving students will be given challenge problems in the form of extension problems such as how can you use your data to make predictions.

Vocabulary: During the cooperative learning activity students are assigned vocabulary words to become experts on. They will research these words and then present them to the class. Here is the description of the vocabulary activity from our cooperative learning activity:
- Poverty
- Mean
- Median
- Mode
- Percent increase/decrease
- Scatter plots
Graphic Organizer: As part of the art lesson activity students are to complete the following graphic organizer to help them plan their art project. They then get their plan approved by the teacher before they begin creating their art piece.
Here is another graphic organizer that students use during the cooperative learning activity to help them organize their thoughts about their statistical research
Multiple Intelligence Activities: Students use their visual/spatial Multiple Intelligence in the art lesson activity when they analyze pictures of poverty to discover the artist's message or focus. Her are some of the pictures that students will be examining:
Students have the opportunity to use their logical Multiple Intelligence when they are planning their meal for their service learning project. They use their logical mathematical reasoning when they calculate the cost of each meal. Here are the planning/preparation activities that students will need to complete:
- Where/how are they going to get the food to prepare, cooking utensils
- Calculate the cost of the food and materials. As well as how they will obtain the funds for these items.
- Obtain permission from the school to use the kitchen facility
- Decide who are they going to serve and where
- research recipes and their nutritional values
- learn how to measure, modify recipes based on the serving sizes, kitchen safety, food handling processes
Choice Assessment: For the final project of the service learning project students can choose to make a movie, PowerPoint, paper, poster, or any other presentation tool of their choice to use to present their work to their families at open house or some other community event.
Rubrics: Here is the rubric for the community service learning final project mentioned above:
